Just like in neighbouring Münster here the Thirty Year's War (1618-48) was ended by the Treaty of Westphalia, as shown by the 42 portraits of the envoys to the peace congress and their rulers: the French "sun king" Louis XIV, the German emperor Ferdinand III and Queen Christina of Sweden, for example. Most valuable possessions of the treasure chamber include the Emperor's Cup, the facsimile of the Treaty of Westphalia ("Osnabrück Peace Instrument") and the Osnabrück militia's necklace. Also to be seen are a model showing Osnabrück in 1633 and a permanent exhibition of Osnabrück's destruction in the Second World War amd tje sibsequent reconstruction. |

Willmann House and Romantic Hotel Walhalla remind us of times when most buildings in the town were half-timbered. The Felix Nussbaum House
- Phone (+49) 0541-3232739
| The Felix Nussbaum House is named after the artist Felix Nusbaum, who was born in Osnabrück in 1904 and murdered in Auschwitz in 1944. Like no other painter, his impressive works record the stations of his life, from the "happy childhood" in a Jewisch merchant family, via initial artistic success in Berlin, to the despair of a persecuted Jew living in Belgian exile. The house bearing his name was built according to plans drawn up by Daniel Libeskind, and is home to the 180 works in the Felix Nussbaum Collection. The collection includes Nussbaum's seminal work, "Self-portrait with Jewisch Identity Card". The creative tension between achitecture and painting has given rise to spaces admonishing us not to forget the fate of Europe's Jews during the Holocaust. |
